On June 6, Jerry's Fireworks hosted the Hamburg Fireworks Display just south of Lancaster, Ohio, with Mitch Kirkpatrick providing the evening's entertainment.
For much of the day, it looked like Mother Nature might have other plans. Rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and high winds threatened to derail the event before it ever began.
Fortunately, the show-must-go-on attitude prevailed. As the weather improved, the music played, the fireworks launched, and the evening turned into a celebration for everyone in attendance.
Due to the weather, the evening got off to a slightly later start than planned. The band still had equipment to dry, instruments to check, and sound gear to set up before the first note could be played.
The extra work, however, did little to dampen the spirits of the professionals preparing to perform.
Mitch Kirkpatrick and his band handled the challenges with ease, doing what needed to be done to get ready for the crowd. Once everything was in place, they took the stage and kicked off the night with energy and enthusiasm.
In every show I've seen Mitch Kirkpatrick perform, he makes a point of involving the audience. He's not content to simply stand on a stage and sing. He steps off the stage, walks among the crowd, and makes the people attending the show feel like they are part of it.
What stands out most is that Mitch never comes across as a "celebrity." Instead, he comes across as one of the people. There is no sense that he sees himself as above his fans. That attitude shows not only in his performances, but also in his music.
Having worked with Mitch, I can say it extends beyond the stage as well. The same down-to-earth personality that audiences see during a performance is the same one I've experienced in my interactions with him.
One of the night's most memorable moments came when Mitch invited his young niece to join him on stage for a song.
After the performance, Mitch told me she had known about the opportunity for nearly a month. According to him, she had been singing the song every chance she got—around the house, outside, and even in the shower.
When the moment finally arrived, all that practice paid off. She stepped up and delivered a performance that impressed the crowd and earned plenty of smiles.
It was a special moment for the family and just one more highlight in an evening that was as much about community and family as it was music and fireworks.
Considering there was a very real possibility that the event might be canceled because of the weather, the size of the crowd was impressive.
Several hundred people gathered for the show, with others watching from the parking area and along the access road leading to the event.
To me, that says quite a bit. Certainly, the fireworks display was a major attraction, but the crowd gathered around the stage was substantial in its own right.
As a fan, I couldn't help but wonder how many of those people were there specifically to see Mitch perform. The fireworks may have brought people out, but the enthusiastic audience surrounding the stage suggested that Mitch's growing popularity played a significant role in drawing the crowd as well.
It really doesn't matter what the venue is or who the performer may be—if there's live music, chances are you'll find kids dancing in front of the stage.
Mitch's show was no exception. What made this one a little different, however, was that the adults joined in. They seemed to be having just as much fun as the children.
To me, that's one of the signs of a performer who truly connects with an audience. People weren't packing up their chairs or looking for an early exit. They stayed, enjoyed the moment, danced, and became part of the show.
In the end, that's what live entertainment is supposed to do—bring people together for a few hours and give them a reason to smile. On this night, Mitch and his band accomplished exactly that.
The icing on the cake at the end of the night was the fireworks demonstration.
This wasn't a full-scale fireworks show. Instead, it was an opportunity for Jerry's Fireworks Factory to showcase some of the products and effects they have available for upcoming displays.
Even as a demonstration, the presentation was impressive. The new products featured a variety of colors, patterns, and effects that drew plenty of attention from the crowd.
If this preview was any indication of what's to come, fireworks fans have a lot to look forward to. I know I'm excited to see these effects lighting up the sky during the America 250 celebrations next year.
